Who it suits
Travellers drawn to religious heritage, meditation or Buddhist history, and people who prefer slow mornings by the river to a busy sightseeing list. Pilgrim groups can ask for the itinerary to be adapted.
Fitness and health notes
The lanes of old Varanasi are narrow, crowded and uneven, and the ghats are steps without handrails. Boat boarding is over a plank. The drive to Bodh Gaya takes five to six hours. Be ready for strong smells, heat and noise. Footwear is removed at temples and monasteries.
Accessibility
Wheelchair use on the ghats is hard. The boat ride and Sarnath grounds are the more accessible parts of the route; ask for a modified plan.
Itinerary
Varanasi – Sarnath – Bodh Gaya · 4 to 7 days (6-day route shown). A sample day-by-day plan; the final plan is set on your written quote.
-
Day 1
Arrive in Varanasi
Pickup and hotel check-in near the river. In the evening, watch the Ganga aarti from a boat, so you can see the ceremony without the crowd on the steps.
-
Day 2
Sunrise on the Ganges
A boat ride before sunrise along the ghats, then a guided walk through the lanes: weavers, sweet shops and small shrines. Temple entry follows the security rules of the day. The afternoon is free.
-
Day 3
Sarnath
Drive to Sarnath (about 30 minutes): the Dhamek Stupa, the ruins of the monasteries and the archaeological museum, which is closed on Fridays. Return to Varanasi for a quiet evening or a silk-weaving visit.
-
Day 4
Drive to Bodh Gaya
A five to six hour drive with a lunch stop. Check in and rest; a short evening walk to the town's temple lanes is optional.
-
Day 5
Mahabodhi complex
Visit the Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi tree early, when pilgrims chant and meditate. Then call at monasteries built by different Buddhist communities. Time for silent sitting is built in.
-
Day 6
Departure
Transfer to Gaya airport (about 30 minutes) or onward by road to Patna. Shorter four-day versions leave Bodh Gaya out.
