Who it suits

Travellers who enjoy history, architecture and long scenic drives, and who want to stay in converted palaces or havelis. Suits couples, friends and multigenerational families who are comfortable with a different hotel almost every night.

Fitness and health notes

Drives run four to six hours on most travel days. Forts involve steep ramps and stone steps; Mehrangarh has a lift for part of the climb. The camp night uses a tented room with an attached bathroom, and sand-dune walking is optional. Summer (May to June) is very hot and the quote may suggest a cooler month.

Accessibility

Palace hotels often have ramps but also stairs and uneven courtyards. Camp tents are on sand. Ask for rooms and routes suited to limited mobility.

Itinerary

Jaipur – Jodhpur – Jaisalmer – Udaipur · 8 to 12 days (10-day route shown). A sample day-by-day plan; the final plan is set on your written quote.

1. Day 1

   Arrive in Jaipur

   Airport or station pickup and check-in at a heritage hotel. Evening free; a short walk to the old walled city for chai and sweets is an easy start.

2. Day 2

   Jaipur

   Amber Fort, City Palace and Jantar Mantar with a guide; afternoon in the block-print and jewellery bazaars. Optional cooking class in a family home in the evening.

3. Day 3

   Jaipur to Jodhpur

   A six-hour drive with a stop at the Pushkar lake or a roadside dhaba as time allows. In the late afternoon, walk the blue-washed lanes of the old city below the fort.

4. Day 4

   Mehrangarh Fort, on to Jaisalmer

   Morning at Mehrangarh Fort with an audio or live guide, then Jaswant Thada. Drive to Jaisalmer in the afternoon (about five hours) and check in near the golden sandstone fort.

5. Day 5

   Jaisalmer and the desert

   Explore the living fort and the carved havelis in the morning. Late afternoon, jeep or camel ride across the dunes at Sam or Khuri, sunset, folk music and dance, dinner and a night in a camp.

6. Day 6

   Back to Jodhpur

   Breakfast at the camp and the return drive (about five hours). Afternoon at leisure; this is the lightest day on the route.

7. Day 7

   Ranakpur and Udaipur

   Drive to Udaipur, stopping at the marble Jain temples of Ranakpur, known for their carved pillars (modest dress is required). Arrive in the evening.

8. Day 8

   Udaipur palaces and lake

   City Palace museum, the Jagdish Temple lanes and the Saheliyon-ki-Bari garden, then a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola.

9. Day 9

   Free day in Udaipur

   Time to rest, shop for miniature paintings, or add an optional village visit or cooking class.

10. Day 10

    Departure

    Transfer to Udaipur airport for your onward flight. For an eight-day version, drop Day 2 in Jaipur and Day 9 in Udaipur; for twelve days, add Bundi or Pushkar.
