Second opinions and planned care in India for patients from the US
People in the United States often ask us about elective procedures where out-of-pocket cost is a barrier, or about getting another specialist view. Here is how to approach that carefully and keep your own physician in the loop.
Elective care and second opinions
Urgent or emergency problems belong with local services. Planned procedures and second opinions are where a trip can be considered. We cannot tell you whether treatment in India is right for you; a specialist who has seen your records can start that conversation.
Dollar estimates
Because estimates are already in US dollars, there is no conversion step. Ask for the quote itemised, with what is included and the number of hospital days assumed, then compare it with a written quote from a US provider if you have one.
Insurance and employer plans
Most US health plans, including Medicare, restrict or exclude care outside the country. Call your insurer or plan administrator and ask in writing what, if anything, applies to planned treatment abroad and to complications after you return.
Time zones
US Eastern Time is 10 hours 30 minutes behind India (9 hours 30 minutes when daylight saving applies); other US zones differ. Check the offset for your own city before accepting a slot, and expect calls early in the US morning or evening.
Keep your physician involved
Share the plan with your primary care doctor or specialist before you go. Request copies of your records, ask whether they will review the Indian hospital summary, and agree who handles post-procedure problems at home.
Visa
Visa help is guidance only. The decision is made by the authorities, and requirements depend on your nationality and change over time. Check the current rules on the official Indian visa portal before you book anything. indianvisaonline.gov.in
Questions from the United States
Does Medicare or my insurer cover this?
What are the time differences?
Are quotes in US dollars?
Can I just get a second opinion?
Should my doctor know?
How it works: you send records, a partner hospital gives an opinion and a written estimate, and you decide whether to travel. We do not publish a price for your treatment; any figure is a planning estimate until a hospital quotes in writing.
